Joy Belew
Special Needs Coordinator
Joy joined the staff in February 2005 to fill this new part–time position but has been a parishioner since 1989. She serves as a liaison with the clergy and staff program directors as well as lay leaders to ensure that St. Columba’s is a welcoming and inclusive community for all. Working with Pattie Ames, Emily Gowdy Canady and Jessie Murray, she is developing a new approach to inclusion based on Individual Spiritual Formation Plans. For children and youth with special needs who are registered in church programs, ISFPs provide unique guides to assist everyone and to ensure a positive, inclusive experience. ISFPs are similar to the Individual Education Plans used in school systems. Joy coordinates the Special Needs Team and also works with the Pastoral Care Team to help identify and stay connected with parishioners with special needs. She is developing a resource center to assist with educating people about various disabilities.
