"Preparing for the shock of Holy Week and Easter!"
The caption above is one way to think about Lent. We give ourselves six weeks to prepare for the shocking notion that God really is for us and that we are being transformed each day into a community of faith and service. To help realize more of the possibilities in our lives, we give up the things that rob us of our freedom.
Our worship during Lent takes on a more of a penitential feel. But we shouldn’t expect penitential to be grim and lacking in beauty. Like last year we will begin the 9 and 11:15 Eucharists with a penitential office that employs Hymn 674: “Forgive our sins as we forgive.” With our promise to let old bitterness depart, we settle in and engage the Word of God. All the gospel passages will be from Luke and include some of the more stirring and poignant stories of Jesus’ ministry. We are headed to Jerusalem and the most important week of our year.
Once again our service music will be the Proulx “Mass in Byzantine Style.” We are using a beautiful setting of the Lord’s Prayer by Nicholas Rimsky-Korsakov. It is also in the Byzantine style and pairs well with the Proulx. In these settings we experience the beauty of Russian descant while the music invites us to go deeper into the words we are singing. A blessed Lent to all!
