8 December 2016
To My Dear Parish Family and friends,
After nearly 25 years of service at St. Columba's, I have made the decision to retire at the end of this program year. As I approach my 71st birthday, I find I am very ready for a gentler pace of life. I can't possibly describe how grateful I am to the countless numbers of you for your unwavering love and support during these many years, and for the opportunity to encourage the love of music for so long.
My last day will be June 11, 2017 (St. Columba Sunday). I know I will have the opportunity to speak with many of you between now and then.
The choice to retire is bittersweet-I love you all so very much-but the time has come to pass along the baton.
With gratitude to all,
John A. Hurd
Director of Music and Organist
Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
It has been my great privilege and joy to serve with John Hurd during these past fifteen months since my arrival here.
There will be abundant opportunity this spring for us to sing our paeans of praise. We will have a special celebration for John on Columba Day, June 11. Be that as it may, I want to offer now my own profound thanks. I am grateful for John's musical skills-on the keyboard and as choir director; for his creativity, flexibility and expertise in leading liturgical music; for his gifts building relationships and community with all ages, among the choirs, and beyond. Above all, I am grateful for John as one who is kind, gracious, and generous; he's all heart, ready with compassion, and ready to laugh.
John has been an important part of the musical legacy at St. Columba's. He will be missed. John's letter of agreement stated that he would retire at year-end 2016, so I am grateful he agreed to my request to stay on and lead us through the program year. In staying through Columba Day 2017, John will help ensure a smooth transition, as we take up finding a new music director in the new year.
In the meantime, whether you've been singing and making music for years, or waiting for the right opportunity, now is the time. Come. Join John and sing. In Advent, this Christmas, and all through the spring. Lift your voices, and lift our hearts in praise.
