St. Columba's Episcopal Church

Way To Go, John!

Date: May 11, 2017

John Hurd’s last Sunday as music director and organist at St. Columba’s will be Columba Day, Sun., June 11. A special edition of our Columba Day annual picnic is planned for that day to celebrate his music ministry of 23 years. We will send John on his way down “Raglan Road” with a Gaelic blessing (11:15 am service), a little ribbing, lots of loving and one last big hurrah. Who knows what other surprises may be in store?

Festivities for the Celebration of John’s Music Ministry
A Newly Commissioned Anthem will be offered at the 9 and 11:15 am services. The chosen text is by F. Pratt Green (in the hymnal as “When In Our Music God Is Glorified”), and the music is by Douglas Major, John’s dear friend, music colleague and former organist at the Washington National Cathedral. The dedication for this anthem reads: “Commissioned by the people of St. Columba’s Episcopal Church, Washington, DC, with love and affection for John Hurd, whose music ‘moved us to a more profound Alleluia’”–a quotation from the hymn.

The Return of Columba–the writer, visionary, worker of miracles, and, yes, vanquisher of monsters of the deep–is also planned. In this interactive drama first performed in 2016, playwright Mary Hall Surface re-imagined St. Columba with a new story to share—one with humor and heart. It will be offered at the 9 and 11:15 am services in the Church Nave. The music for the original play was written by John Hurd, and this return performance is given in his honor.

BookFest  The Craig Eder Library will hold our annual Columba Day BookFest on Sun., June 11, from 8 am to 12:45 pm in the Common. We invite you to sponsor a book for the library in memory or honor of someone special in your life.
