The St. Columba's Nursery School Board of Governors is empowered by the Vestry of St. Columba's Church to oversee the business of the Nursery School and to safeguard the School's mission. The Board is comprised of fifteen voting and four ex officio members including the Rector and Wardens and the School's Director.
Meet our 2016-17 Board
Liz Holleman Brown joined the Board of Governors in 2012, and is now serving as Board Chair. Liz is a life-long parishioner of St. Columba’s Church and a graduate of the Nursery School. Liz's children also graduated from the Nursery School and while they were there Liz enjoyed the opportunity to serve as the Parent Committee Co-Chair for three years. Liz is the marketing director at BCG Holleman.
Susan Beal has served on the Board of Governors since 2012. She works in the business office of a school and treatment facility in northwest DC. She received her B.A. from Smith College and her M.B.A. from Georgetown University. She and her husband live in Washington with their two children, both of whom began to cultivate their love of both playing and learning while at St. Columba's Nursery School.
David Hawkings joined the Board in 2012 after serving six years on the parish vestry. As a journalist covering Congress, he was managing editor of CQ Weekly for six years and is now senior columnist for Roll Call. David and his wife Betsy live a block from the church and have been parishioners for two decades; their sons "graduated" from the Nursery School in 1995 and 2003.
Mark Lay is a lifelong Episcopalian and has been a member of St. Columba’s since 2002. He is currently serving as the Board's Interim Treasurer. He lives in American University Park with his wife, Prentiss, and their two children, Caroline and Andrew, who both are graduates of St. Columba’s Nursery School. Mark has served on the Board of Governors since May 2012.
Molly Evans has served on the Board of Governors since 2013, and currently serves as its Secretary. She is a health care lawyer at a law firm in Washington. She received her B.A. from Middlebury College and her J.D. from Washington & Lee University. She and her husband have been parishioners of St. Columba's for the past ten years. Their boys, Henry and Sam, are proud SCNS alumni.
Bob Broeksmit has been a parishioner of St. Columba's since 1996 and serves on the vestry as well as the SCNS board. He is currently the vestry representative on the SCNS BoardHe and his wife, Susan Bollendorf, have three children, Henry, Lillian, and George, who loved attending SCNS. Bob is Managing Director at Treliant Risk Advisors in Washington and has spent his career in the mortgage banking industry. He has a B.A. in History from Yale University.
Jim Barnett has been a parishioner at St. Columba’s Episcopal Church since 2000. He is an internal consultant and social entrepreneur with AARP, and holds a master’s degree in nonprofit management from George Washington University. He lives in American University Park with his wife Susanna and two children, both graduates of St. Columba’s Nursery School. He has served on the Board of Governors since September 2013.
Shane Kramer joined the Board of Governors in 2015. He and his wife, Maureen, have been St. Columba's parishioners since 2004 and all three of their children are Nursery School alumni. Shane is an employee benefits attorney in Washington, D.C. and received a B.A. from the University of Virginia, a J.D. from Washington and Lee University, and an LL.M. in Taxation from Georgetown University.
David Burton, a long-time resident of AU Park, joined the Board in 2015. He is married to Anne Chrun and their two children attended St. Columba’s Nursery school. Currently a consultant, he was formerly Director of the International Monetary Fund’s Asia and Pacific Department and Chairman of the Investment Committee for the IMF’s pension fund.
