At St. Columba’s Nursery School, we believe that each child, each family, and each staff member has an infinite capacity to learn and grow. We cultivate their God-given and unique abilities in a joyful atmosphere of supported inquiry, sociability, and inclusion.
Our Piggy Bank Campaign has started. To support our nursery school please click here.
Each classroom at St. Columba's Nursery School is staffed by two head teachers and supported by weekly visits from our floating teachers who provide an extra pair of hands so the homeroom staff can work with small groups, do observations, or plan upcoming lessons.
In addition to our homeroom teachers and floaters, the School employs a full-time coordinator to manage our outdoor classroom-the playground. Each morning the Playground Coordinator sets up the playground with equipment and materials that entice children to explore and engage actively while outside.
Our Environmental Science teacher meets with all our children once a week to teach our children about stewardship to the earth and guide them through fascinating experiments and lessons centered around the theme of taking care of our animals and our gardens. Lessons include gardening, composting, worm husbandry, to name a few. In addition, she helps our children with our monthly Soup Day when the children prepare a vat of vegetable soup (often serving items the children have grown themselves) to serve to the clients of St. Columba's Church Water Ministry programs.
Our Music & Movement teacher meets twice weekly with all our children to sing, play instruments, and act out stories with the children.
Teachers and administrators at St. Columba's meet the standards and criteria set forth by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the District of Columbia's Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE).
