Lay Readers & Chalice Bearers

When we gather for worship, clergy and lay people both have a place in reading of scripture and administering communion. We “feed” large numbers of people each Sunday in five different celebrations of the eucharist. Lay people (about 76 in number) serving in teams read lessons, offer prayers of the people, and administer the chalice. A range of ages is represented in the members of the teams, each of which has a captain. We have teenagers, young adults, and older adults. Because of the large numbers of people coming to receive bread and wine, a director of lay ministers schedules the teams to serve each Sunday. A “game plan” of assignments is made by the verger.
