palm sunday The liturgy for Palm Sunday carries us into Holy Week. Services begin with the reenactment of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. But the mood shifts with the reading of the passion, and we begin the journey through the events that culminate in Jesus’ crucifixion and death. At all four services in the church nave, the gospel is the story of the passion, read dramatically in the style of readers’ theater. At 9 and 11:15 am in the church nave, the service begins with the Liturgy of the Palms followed by a joyful procession with choirs, clergy, and lay ministers. After the reading of the passion, we do not hear music from the organ again until the Easter Vigil; singing by choirs and congregation is unaccompanied. The St. Columba Singers sing both services, joined by the Boy Choir and Girl Choir at 9 am. Storytime for children is offered during the passion reading at the 9 am service. At 9:15 and 11:15 am in the Great Hall, the gospel is told story-style and songs are sung to help children prepare for the great celebration of Easter next week. Children have a chance to join in a Palm Sunday procession. At 5 pm, there are palms, hymns for Palm Sunday and soloist, mezzo-soprano Linda Allison. At 7:30 pm, a brief service for the close of day, compline, is led by a small choir. The church is open for a half hour before the service for silent reflection and prayer. Child care is available for small children, 8:45 am 12:30 pm. Sunday School and classes for youth and adults do not meet. Schedule: Palm Sunday: Contact: Rose Duncan
