Honoring Their Roots: One African American Family’s Struggle Between Freedom and Equality in Northwest Washington
Stirring the Waters is hosting the forum on Sunday, January 16th, in recognition of MLK Weekend. Clara “Tiggy” Myrick Green (a parishioner) and her co-author Barbara Boyle Torrey will present their book,Between Freedom and Equality: The History of an African American Family in Washington DC.” It tells the generational story of the Pointer family, beginning with a formerly enslaved man, George Pointer, who purchased his own freedom and was instrumental in building the C&O Canal. The book chronicles his descendants’ lives in Northwest Washington, including their acquisition of a family farm in what is now known as Lafayette/Pointer Park and Lafayette School, their homes in the Reno community where Alice Deal Junior High is now located, and their residences in Georgetown. Come learn this fascinating history that continues to evolve in our own backyard.
