Coming in 2022: Labyrinth Courtyard

July 2022

In the coming weeks, this sloping lawn will be shaped into three beautiful terraces, made ready for the installation of an accessible stone labyrinth–a pathway for walking meditation–surrounded by trees and other plantings. Take a peek at the attached plans to get a sense for the layout and the foliage.

We can’t wait to share this with our neighbors! If you’ve attended our indoor labyrinth walks in the past (which will continue to be offered on second Tuesdays), we look forward to welcoming you to our new space. If you’ve never explored a labyrinth before, you’re in for a treat. Following its single path to the center and back is a simple and soothing means of meditation for people of all ages and abilities.

Coming soon: A beautiful new garden terrace on the corner of Albemarle and 42nd, offering meditation and reflection space for the whole community!

A stunning new labyrinth will be installed here in the coming months. A labyrinth looks like a maze but has no dead-ends: a single circular path goes to the center and back out again. Labyrinths are based on ancient designs found in all cultures around the world. People of all faiths or no faith use labyrinths today as a form of prayer or walking meditation.

St. Columba’s has hosted indoor labyrinth walks for seven years, attended by many Tenleytown neighbors, during Art All Night and Winterfest, or as part of our recently revived secondTuesday evening walks. This new installation will allow both parishioners and members of the community to experience a labyrinth at any time.

We look forward to sharing more in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
