Friendship Place

Friendship Place and snack bags ministry

In the early 1990s, St. Columba’s was a founding partner in creating Friendship Place, a non-profit social services agency formed to address homelessness in Northwest Washington DC. Today, Friendship Place is a leading provider of services for people experiencing homelessness, offering housing assistance, street outreach, shelter support, job placement and medical and psychiatric services throughout the DC Metro area and at a drop-in center at 4713 Wisconsin Avenue NW in the Tenley neighborhood. Many guests of the St. Columba’s Water Ministry receive assistance at the Friendship Place Welcome Center.

St. Columba’s volunteers actively supports the work of Friendship Place by creating 40 snack bags for distribution at the Welcome Center every Tuesday and Thursday. These pre-packaged snacks can include small canned tuna with crackers, jerky, popped popcorn, fruit cup, granola bar, cup-of-noodle soup and other items. The snack bags are greatly appreciated by our neighbors challenged by food insecurity and lack of reliable shelter. Parishioner Hal Davis serves on the Friendship Place Board of Directors and represents St. Columba’s on its Congregations Council. Hal can be contacted at [email protected].
