Rebuilding Together
SERVE
Rebuilding Together has been providing freehome repairs for DC’s low-income Veterans, elderly, disabled, families with children, andcommunity facilities since 1983. St. Columba’s,a founding member of Rebuilding TogetherDC, (then Christmas in April), has worked onone or two houses for almost 40 years!
Each house has its unique set of challenges andissues to be addressed, but often there is workfor all skill levels that are interested. Fromcleaning and painting to more involved tasks like putting in a sink or toilet. Most housesthat St. Columba’s sponsors are “heavy” houses, meaning there is a lot of work to be done. Weare able to request heavy houses because of thenumber of volunteers that work on the houses.
One of the unique features of St. Columba’sRebuilding Together is that isintergenerational. Volunteers as young asmiddle school support this effort, and it is arequirement for those attending the SCAP tripeach summer.
COVID has impacted RTs efforts, just likemany other ministries. We were last able towork on a house in 2019, but are hoping towork on a house again in April 2022. We willhave sign-ups in church and electronically inthe spring if you’d like to volunteer and helpwith this important ministry.
